Open AI has updated its policy about how people can use its technology for warfare purposes. The CEO of openAI Sam Altman removed the ban on using their technology for weapons development and military purposes.

The written policy stated changes had been implemented to make the rules clearer and more readable. Since then, the word clearer has been replaced with service-specific guidance.

The information about OpenAI’s policy changes was brought to our attention through a report by The Intercept. According to the report, OpenAI modified its usage policy on January 10. The policy prohibited using the technology for activities with a high risk of physical harm, such as weapons development and military and warfare.

However, the new policy states, “use our service to harm yourself or others”, but it no longer has the previous restriction on using its technology for military and warfare purposes. Furthermore, the company still prohibits using its technology for weapons development.

In a statement quoted by TechCrunch regarding the updated policy, OpenAI mentioned, “Our policy doesn’t permit the use of our tools to harm people. The updated policy prohibits creating weapons, engaging in communication surveillance, or causing harm to others or property.

For example, we are collaborating with DARPA to develop new cybersecurity tools for securing open-source software. According to the statement, it was not clear whether these beneficial use cases would have been permitted under the previous policy.

The goal of the policy update is to offer clarity and facilitate discussions around such use cases. Many experts worldwide are concerned about the potential negative impacts of AI, especially in the context of wars.

These concerns are increasing with the creation of advanced AI technologies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard. Increasingly, people are asking what AI is and how it can be responsibly used.

In a previous interview with Wired magazine, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt compared artificial intelligence systems and the significant impact of nuclear weapons before World War II.

Schmidt pointed out how some technologies can completely change things. He said, Sometimes, a new weapon or technology comes along that changes everything. Einstein wrote a letter to Roosevelt in the 1930s saying there is a new technology of nuclear weapons that could change the perspective of the war.

This comparison underscores AI’s profound potential influence, particularly in autonomy and distributed systems.

According to the report, the results are not mentioned in the report The killing-adjacent tasks, which are related to harm or danger, can be assisted by a large language model like ChatGPT.
